- 2012 Tournaments
There’s nothing like the anticipation and excitement that builds up inside days before a tournament. The Avoca Mixed 7s hockey tournament in Dublin is ready to launch this weekend and with almost 200 players, we’re set for a feast of hockey that’ll leave you hockey appetite nicely nourished and content!
There are no heroic goalkeepers between the sticks and with no offsides and huge goals, there should be goals a plenty. There are 4 major trophies (Cup, Plate, Shield and Trophy) to be won along with a top goalscorer award and a best player award.
For more information, see here.
Soon after, Bratislava plays host to the third annual football tournament. This tournament has always been the most cosmopolitan of our tournaments with an array of nationalities participating. With excellent spring weather and an amazing Astro-Turf to play on, it’s perhaps the most eagerly awaited tournament in the calendar.
This event is ideal for goalkeepers with goals scored at a premium, the star of the show is usually the man who best shields the net.

- Euro 2012 in Poland / Ukraine
Tournament Heaven 2012 Dublin Football Tournament
The European Championships in Poland and the Ukraine are going to make such a difference to the atmosphere here in Ireland this year. Only 2 years ago, Ireland’s spot in the World Cup in South Africa was pulled from under their feet and watching the games in 2010 just wasn’t the same. Well good old Trappatoni has got the team jetting off to Poland in June with dreams of making history and knocking out one of the big boys. They’ll be a host of Irish support going with them to cheer them on and it really is going to be an excellent summer this year!
You may not be one of the lucky ones going over to Poland – but you’ll support the team from here and as always, the Irish support is going to be second to none. We have organised a football tournament in Dublin on 9th June, the day after the tournament kicks off in Poland and the day before Ireland’s first match against Croatia. We’d like you to wear your colours and compete for the crown of Dublin champions! With numerous foreign teams signing up, it’s going to be an amazing day out!

- Dodgeball
Later in the year, we plan on organising a Dodgeball tournament in Dublin. We’re not sure of the levels of interest, but if we can get a handful of teams keen to sign up, then I’m sure it would be an incredibly memorable day!
If you haven’t seen the film Dodgeball – then check out the trailer here.
What is Dodgeball?
Thursday 16 February 2012Dodgeball is a game in which players try to hit other players on the opposing team with their own balls while at the same time avoid being hit themselves.
At the beginning of a dodgeball game, the balls are lined up on the central dividing line. The players then rush towards the center line simultaneously and try to grab one of the dodgeballs and throw or roll it backwards to their teammates (they cannot pick up a ball and throw it instantly). This is known as the opening rush. Once the game has commenced, players throw balls at members of the opposing team in an attempt to eliminate their players.
When a player has been hit by a dodgeball on the full (i.e., without hitting the roof, the floor, any of the walls, or an outside object and rebounding off) and no one catches it before it becomes dead, that player has been eliminated and must move to his team’s designated bench area (players are still out if the ball rebounds off another dodgeball and/or player and hits them on the full). The same rule applies if any number of people try to catch the ball but drop it. Depending on the rules and variation, “headshots” (balls thrown in dodgeball that hit an opposing player in the head) may either result in the thrower being out, or the person being hit being out.
If a player catches a ball thrown by the opposing team on the full, then the player who threw the ball is eliminated and the team that caught the ball can reinstate the player that has been out the longest. As long as the ball has been caught in any way and is held for two seconds, the thrower is out (i.e., even if the ball is caught between the legs, the thrower is still out). If a dodgeball hits an opposing player but gets caught by one of the hit player’s teammates, the thrower is out, a player gets reinstated, and the player who got hit stays in.
Players can pick up dead balls and throw them back at the other team. Players are allowed to leave the confines of the court to gather balls that have rolled out of bounds, but cannot throw the ball until they are back inside the court. A ball thrown from outside the court cannot eliminate an opponent who is hit; it only succeeds in getting the thrower automatically eliminated. If that ball however is caught on the full, the opposition can reinstate the player that has been out the longest from their team. A player who moves completely out of bounds when a ball is thrown at them and does not catch that ball is also eliminated. If a player moves into the opponent’s zone or picks up a ball from inside the opponent’s zone without it fully rolling inside their zone, that player is out. Players can also get eliminated if their throw hits an opponent on the head, displays bad sportsmanship, or cheats. Kicking the balls is prohibited.
Depending on the rules of a particular game, a ball in the possession of a player can be used to block incoming balls thrown by the opposing team.Once all the players on one team are eliminated, the game ends.

- Tournament Heaven’s Balls Pinched!
With the next tournament only a few weeks away, it has emerged that Tournament Heaven has got no balls!
Having suffered damage caused by a fire in a neighbouring apartment above us back in April, a scaffolding structure was raised to tackle the repair job on the penthouse. Last month a burglar was seen descending from the piping and dashed off apparently empty handed. However after closer inspection, it seems the balls for the upcoming football fun in September have gone missing!
More balls required guvner!!
