Indoor Hockey 2016

With the absence of a ladies indoor hockey tournament in Leinster, @NeedAWhistler approached us about putting together a social tournament just so teams had the opportunity to take part if they wanted. Plans were discussed in early December and with only a 4-hour booking at St. Columba's, we started promoting hoping to get a few teams to take part. It was really pleasing to see the maximum of 6 teams registering and following on from the feedback we have already received, we plan on doing another one later this year as a warm up for the 2016-17 season.

The draw took place on Thursday 31st December and the teams were grouped as follows:

Group 1Group 2
A ~ Avoca BootgirlsD ~ Railway Union Ladies
B ~ Three Rock Rovers LadiesE ~ Avoca 19s
C ~ Clontarf LadiesF ~ Glenanne Ladies

Railway Union and Clontarf had already competed in the Nationals finishing up 4th and 5th respectively. So it would be interesting enough to see how the matches unfolded. With three teams in each group, teams also had to play two random teams from the other group so each team would play 4 group matches in total. Only the top team in each group would progress to battle it out for the cup. Teams were also awarded an extra point if the managed to win by a 3+ goal margin. However, surprisingly, the first three matches saw a total of 5 goals with 2 draws and a narrow 1-0 win for Avoca Bootgirls pushing them into pole position in Group 1. In group 2, Avoca 19s were certainly holding their own with 2 draws but it was Glenanne who beat Railway Union 3-1 to push above the other two to lead the group.

Avoca Bootgirls ensured top spot of Group 1 with a draw against Railway Union and a 2-0 win against club mates Avoca 19s. Clontarf edged 2nd spot in the group thanks to a 2-0 win against group rivals Three Rock Rovers. Glenanne went from strength to strength as they grabbed bonus points in both of their final encounters beating Clontarf 3-0 and Three Rock Rovers 4-0 finishing top of group 2. Avoca 19s held on to 2nd spot in the group thanks to goal difference but Railway Union could have snatched it if they'd added another goal to the 1-0 win over Clontarf.

Railway Union perhaps had not started the way the had wanted to, but they certainly made up for it in their final battle for 5th place, beating Three Rock Rovers 6-2. Six goals were scored between 5 different players; one a piece from the Heisterkamp sisters, de Burgh Whyte, McCarthy and a brace from Lloyd while Dawson and Lynch scored for Three Rock Rovers.

Clontarf were unable to score in the 3rd place play-off and were beaten by a very promising Avoca 19s side by the odd goal. O'Neill scored the only goal of a very even game despite Clontarf's best efforts to get back on level terms only to be denied from numerous short corners by resolute defending.

Glenanne were crowned worthy champions as they completed a 2-0 win in the final against Avoca Bootgirls. A superb final and most enjoyable to watch, with goals from Daly and McCormack sealing the win and also the contest for top goal scorer with McCormack bagging 6 goals while Daly scored 5 in second spot.

Many thanks to our partners @NeedAWhistler for helping us make this one possible and many thanks to the team of umpires; Cian, Yani, Nasir and Zack. We look forward to seeing you next time!
