Dublin Dodgeball 2015

The 3rd Dublin Dodgeball tournament was the biggest one yet with 12 teams competing. It's also the first year we have had to turn teams away... however, if the tournament continues to grow, we will ensure to accommodate more teams next year!

Team Captains prior to the tournament

Group 1
The opening match saw reigning champions Kapow take on their other club team KaBlam in what was an excellent tie which saw the holders edge out their challengers narrowly winning by 3 rounds to 2. Both Kapow and KaBlam won their remaining group matches to ensure their group placings of 1st and 2nd. A new team from Galway led by Stephen Fletcher notched up an impressive 7-3 win against the Jammy Dodgers to start their tournament off to a flyer!

Group 2
The Group 2 seeds, Waterford, narrowly beat new team FaBallous 6-4 in their opening encounter but then went on to play rival club Reservoir Dodge in a close-fought match which went in favour of the Reservoir Dodge team. However, in their final game, Waterford held nothing back as they comfortably beat Team Sweeney: CSI; winning all 5 rounds. Reservoir Dodge also beat Team Sweeney: CSI, but failed to win their final match against FaBallous and relinquished top spot in the group. Team Sweeney: CSI, despite finishing bottom of the group, showed experience and determination to fend off FaBallous and notch their first win of the tournament.

Group 3
Queen's Zay, the seeds in group 3, proved too much for the Avengers winning 8-2, but came up against stiffer opposition in their 2nd match against Turtley Dodge... however, they won that one by the odd round. So to clinch the group no. 1 spot with maximum points, they had to beat their club team Queen Bees. They held nothing back and dispatched of them 10-0 to win the group. Looking to earn 2nd spot in the group were Turtley Dodge and The Avengers; both teams had 1 win under their belts having beaten Queen Bees and their final group place was to be decided in this match. Turtley Dodge came through emphatically winning 10-0 finishing the group as runners-up.

Last Man Standing Competition
Great to see everyone getting involved in this free-for-all but there can be only one... as players were eliminated, the court got smaller and smaller. The last woman eliminated was Inga Kirchwehm from Galmighties while the last man to be eliminated was Kelvin Lee from KaBlam. With three male contestants remaining, Kelvin claimed the title in spectacular fashion by simultaneously catching 2 balls thrown at him by his final challengers - a suitable script for any Dodgeball outcome.

Cup Quarter-Finals
Kapow once again set the standard in the opening knock-out round by cruising past the Avengers winning in straight sets. Waterford knocked out challengers FaBallous who put up a good effort but eventually lost 8-4 and the other seeded team Queen's Zay did not disappoint either winning 9-5 against KaBlam who gave them a good run. In the other Quater-Final match, Reservoir Dodge fought off Turtley Dodge to win 8-4 making it two teams from Waterford and two teams from Belfast in the Cup Semis.

Shield Semi & Finals
The Jammy Dodgers got their revenge against the Galmighties, who beat them in the group, winning this encounter by the odd round 4-3. The former proceeded through to the final of the Shield while the latter played a classification match affectionately known as the Egg Cup. In the other semi, the scores were level at 7 points each, but Team Sweeney: CSI advanced through on points. Queen Bees picked up the Egg Cup with their first win of the tournament following a 8-4 victory against the Galmighties. Team Sweeney: CSI, favourites to pick up the Shield (Plate Winners 2013 & 2014) were sent home packing empty-handed following a great display by fellow club team Jammy Dodgers who came through 8-4.

Plate Semi & Final
Turtley Dodge progressed through to the Plate Final at the expense of the Avengers in what was a really close match which eventually ended 8-7. In the other semi, KaBlam ensured they would be going back north with a trophy and were rampant eliminating FaBallous in straight sets and then eased past Turtley Dodge 9-1 in the final.

Cup Semis & Finals
Belfast played Waterford in both semi-finals and it was the teams from the north that secured final berths as Kapow won after only 4 rounds while it took Queen's Zay 5 rounds. The bronze medals were heading to Waterford and it was the seeded team that claimed them winning 8-2. Credit to Reservoir Dodge who recorded a personal best tournament finish and will be 4th seeded next year providing we have 16 teams. So the 2015 Cup Final was a rematch between the 2014 finalists; Kapow were looking to make it 3 from 3 while Queen's Zay were looking to knock them off their perch; Kapow retained their title impressively winning 8-2...

Spot prizes were handed out to Lana O'Neill (Queen's Zay), Aimee Clancy (FaBallous), David Cardoso (Turtley Dodge) and Kelvin Lee (KaBlam) for their impressive skills on the courts. Carlos Junior from the Jammy Dodgers was named as Player of the Tournament for some sparkling performances in his first tournament.

Many thanks to our Tournament Partners; the Dublin Dodgeball Club. The club is going from strength to strength with more numbers getting involved which certainly bodes well for the future of the club and the sport. Special thanks also goes to Garvan McEvoy and Stephen Fletcher for their technical assistance!
