Dublin Dodgeball Tournament 2014

Group I Group II
A - Money Shotz F - Team Twosie
B - Queens 3 G - Belfast Avengers
C - Reservoir Dogs H - Queens 1
D - Kapow I - Queens 2
E - Team Onesie J - The Cobras

Being involved in dodgeball is both exciting and nerving. The sight of the dodgeball whizzing through the air can reach some jaw-dropping speeds and when there's nowhere to hide, it is imperitive that you are well versed in the five Ds of dodgeball: dodge, duck, dip, dive and dodge!

There were some great memories from the tournament, Garvan McEvoy rushing out in his opening rush in his Monkey Onesie only to lose his footing and slide over the line eliminating himself in the process. Aaran McCloskey's diving backwards catch; ok he admitted he was falling backwards, but he still had the speed and coordination to catch the oncoming ball and eliminate his adversary! Ellie and Alina both caught dodgeballs (at the same time) restoring their team to its full quota. Smurf from Ivanna B. Queens had in particular 1 amazing round where he dodged a couple of balls, caught one and then took out one of his opponents to win the round all in the blink of an eye! Ed Purcell was inspiring as captain for Reservoir Dodge as he too had a similar feat to Smurf with some excellent moves and a strike to win the round. The headshots, and there were a couple, are usually quite memorable and yes you feel for the ones on the receiving end, but every time, the player carries on though even more determined ha!

It was soon clear who would be the tournament favourites as 2013 winners Kapow (Group I) and Queens Zay (Group II) were on electic form in the group stages winning their matches in comfortable fashion finishing top of their respective groups and advancing directly through to the cup semi finals. While Money Shotz finished 2nd in Group I after winning 3 matches, they had plenty of breathing space from the chasing pack. 3rd place had to be decided by the number of points won as the 3 teams in question had won 1 match and a total of 10 rounds. Only counting the number of points won in the three matches between the three teams, Queens Killerbees were awarded 3rd spot in the group and qualified for the Cup Quarter Final. Team Onesie and Reservoir Dodge moved into the Plate Semis competition.

Go Team Onesie!

The Cobras and Ivanna B. Queens did enough to clinch 2nd and 3rd spots in Group II and qualified for the Cup knock-out rounds, but the Belfast Avengers certainly made them work for it only just losing out to the Cobras 4-6 (4-0, 2-1, 0-6, 0-2, 0-4) and Ivanna B. Queens by a similar scoreline (3-4, 6-0, 2-3, 3-2, 0-6). Team Twosie lost all four matches, but were they saving something in reserve?

The Last Man Standing competition was great fun to see. Members from all teams took part and enjoyed throwing dodgeballs at each other for fun! The court was made smaller as fewer participants remained and at one stage there was just a handful of Queens players remaining. Lana O'Neill and Lesley Tong were the last of the females but the former took a tumble while trying to avoid a dodgeball and was then taken out while defenceless... ah it's a cruel sport! The last few soon were eliminated as the court became narrower and narrower and soon there were only two! Aasish San and Chris McElreavey both took shots at each other, but it was Aasish who was undefeated to claim the honour of being 'Last Man Standing'!

Aasish leading the troops

Money Shotz made light work of Ivanna B. Queens in the first Quarter-final winning in straight sets 8-0 (4-0, 3-0, 4-0, 6-0) and the Cobras dispossed of the Queens Killerbees in similar fashion winning 8-2 (5-0, 5-0, 0-4, 2-0, 5-0).

While Reservoir Dodge dealt with Belfast Avengers in the Plate semis, winning 8-0, Team Onesie surely thought they had the other Plate Final berth wrapped up early into their match only to see a complete turn around from Team Twosie who had yet to win a match. The Onesies led 2-0 only to see their lead disappear and before they knew it, they were out having lost 4-8 (5-3, 5-1, 0-3, 0-3, 0-6, 1-3).

Kapow resumed normal service after their extended break due to the bye into the semis to beat the Cobras 9-1. It was in the 3rd round however that the Cobras found a way through Kapow's defence and almost managed to take the round, but Sean Douglas levelled the scores and were it not for the buzzer, would have won the round with his final shot hitting his rival. Queens Zay joined Kapow in the final after beating Money Shotz 8-2 (0-3, 0-4, 1-2, 3-0, 0-3).

The Plate Final was a 7 round thriller and credit goes to both teams; to Reservoir Dodge for their fighting spirit and to Team Twosie for holding their nerve. Team Twosie made it count in the final round though winning 8-6 (3-2, 5-1, 2-1, 2-3, 0-4, 0-5, 4-0).

The Cobras picked up the 3rd place play-off after a close fought game against Money Shotz, but the former won in straight rounds with the Dooley sisters in great form 4-0 (3-2, 4-1, 4-0, 5-2).

The final did not disappoint and it was a great match. Both sides had breezed through qualifying and finally they now had to face each other. Queens Zay took the advantage but Kapow levelled in the following round. The matches were tight and the result could have gone either way, but it was Kapow's year again as they won 8-4 (4-4, 0-4, 4-1, 3-3, 5-3, 1-0).
