Geoff the Ref Memorial 2018

Geoff the Ref The 2018 Geoff the Ref Memorial Football event almost didn't happen as a date could not be penned in the diary due to other plans taking priority; however, when a free weekend popped up in the calendar we were more than happy when teams showed interest in participating despite the short notice and thus we were able to get the ball rolling...

The Over 35s event took place in the morning and was contested by 5 teams which included last year's winners FC Miracle from Cork along with local sides Shankill, Stewart's Team, Rocco Rovers and Bray Bhoys. Regardless of the player's age, the intensity and skill levels was equally matched with the players' hunger and desire to win. Goals went in to roars of delight, flying saves were met with gasps of disbelief and yes there were some crunching tackles as some players winced. Yes, teams wanted to win, but with no referees, sportsmanship and honour came into play and the grown men played fairly and respectfully.

Most of the games averaged 4-5 goals a game, however, the Shankill boys with a rock at the back in the form of Seb Perciavalle, played out two 0-0 draws. Bray Bhoys edged out last year's champions FC Miracle for top spot in the group with a fine 3-2 victory and Shankill pipped Stewart's Team to third place with a narrow 2-1 win. Hard luck to Rocco Rovers who started off their campaign with a 0-0 draw but sadly couldn't find their feet until the last match where they gave FC Miracle an excellent run for their money only just losing by a couple of goals from 10 scored.

Bronze medals went to Shankill as they beat Stewart's Team 5-3 in the third placed match while on the other pitch FC Miracle got the better of Bray Bhoys in the final winning 3-1 despite some questions being raised regarding time-keeping and the game finishing sooner just as the Bray Bhoys were coming back into it...

The open event sadly didn't get going this year. We had 5 teams sign up for the event but unfortunately two teams had to pull out on the day and 1 decided not to show up. The two teams that did show up played off against each other in a 2x25 minute long match. With some talented young players on both sides, those watching were witness to some great skills, tricks and super goals. SARI led at the break by a couple of goals but pressed on in the second half and eventually won the game 14-7 against Taurus FK who put in a valiant performance. Player of the Tournament was announced as Claudio Koncz from SARI. See you back next year at the earlier time in June/July.
