Dublin 2010

The first tournament in a series planned for 2010 was a smashing success on Saturday 8th May 2010 at DLR Leisure Services Loughlinstown. 8 teams participated in the inaugural event and with one team flying in from Luxembourg just for the competition!

Many thanks to Alive Outside who supplied referee equipment and balls for the event and Tesco for supplying doughnuts and water for what turned out to be a warm day, it certainly helped!

Real Athletico Monkstown would inevitably find the going tough as they were down to a bare six with two players dropping out last minute. AS Luxembourg, with only seven, were down to six as one player got injured in the opening minutes! The team with the largest squad was Young Guns with eleven players.

After five matches in the qualification rounds, Sallynoggin Celtic and Borough Squad remained unbeaten going into the quarter final knock out stage amassing 32 and 33 goals respectively.

Borough Squad and Slovakia Team met up in the first semi while Sallynoggin Celtic played off against Newpark Rovers. The teams had played each other once before in group matches; Borough Squad had come away with an impressive 6-1 victory against Slovakia while the game between Sallynoggin and Newpark was a much tighter affair, the former winning 2-1. The knock-out stage, however, was much different. Both Slovakia and Newpark had led in their matches but their respective opponents came back and levelled sending both semis into penalty shoot-outs! Three penalties each followed. A couple of excellent saves from Michal Durica sent Slovakia through to the final winning 2-1. Sallynoggin Celtic won their penalty competition 3-1 with Ross Camen saving well.

Slovakia stormed into an impressive lead in the final and although Sallynoggin continually tried to get back into the match, they were caught on the counter and ended up losing their first match of the tournament 1-5. Borough Squad remained unbeaten in the tournament as they went on to win 3rd place 6-4 against Newpark Rovers.

The raffle and awards ceremony took place at the Harbor Bar & Grill and we would like to thank the Harbor very much for their sponsorship. Player of the Tournament went to Darragh Robinson of Young Guns. Top goal scorer went to Marek Stankovic of Slovakia Team with 20 goals. Best goalkeeper went to Ross Camen of Sallynoggin Celtic.

Many thanks to all for a fantastic tournament!
