Avoca Vets Mixed 8s 2017

Avoca Hockey Club Defib Hockey Tournament 2017 In November 2012, Paddy Loscher, collapsed from a Cardiac Arrest while playing with Avoca Vets. He clinically died four times on the pitch. A Defibrillator, and the prompt attention of First Aiders saved his life. After a Quadruple Bypass he resumed playing hockey and sports. Without this vital piece of equipment he would not be alive today. Cardiac Arrest can happen at any age no matter how fit you are. Our tournament , so please come join us on Sunday 8th of January and support our Defib fundraiser.

Despite it being early January, we were blessed with not only a mild climate but even the sun came out to give us a spring in our step. The tournament was superbly represented from local clubs and with the funds raised on the day, a defibrillator has now been purchased for Sion Hill. We applaud the efforts given by all that took part along with the sponsors who so kindly donated excellent prizes for the raffle.

Group 1
The AA (Albert Ladies and Avoca HC Men) started their campaign well getting off to a 3-1 win against YMCA HC while the points were shared in the other group game between DASH and Greystones HC. YMCA put pressure on the group leaders with a 3-2 win over DASH while Greystones drew their second match against the AA. Greystones HC got a win in their final group game to see them progress in place of YMCA HC and already qualified The AA won their final match to clinch top spot with two wins and a draw.

Group 2
The Panthers started as they meant to go on and splattered Avoca HC 6-2 in their opening match. A draw and another win was enough to see them progress to the Cup Semis in pole position. Avoca HC recovered well from their opening defeat and put four past Paddy Loscher's team; the latter also conceded four against Let's Meet Up in the Year 2000 (LMU) and so in the final group game, it was all to play for with the winner of LMU and Avoca HC going through to the Cup semis. In actual fact, LMU only needed a draw to progress thanks to a better goal difference, but conceded early on following a mazy dribble by Stephen Day. LMU pulled one back through Bazil Cromer only for Avoca to edge in front again and as LMU pushed for that all decisive equaliser, the whistle went to the relief of the home side.

Semi-Finals
YM booked their place in the Shield Final thanks to a 3-1 win over Marrillac Team and DASH joined them in the final picking up their first win of the tournament following a 2-1 win over LMU. In the Cup semis, a very tense match between The AA and Avoca HC saw a lot of opening pressure from the AA and were it not for the heroics of Tim Stewart and his stick on the line, the outcome would have been very different. Goals from Paula Anderton and Stephen Day on the counter ensured Avoca HC progressed to the final. In the other semi, the Panthers were on fire and dispatched six past Greystones HC with Emma Meir and Hilary Long rampant.

Finals
LMU defeated Marrillac Team in the tie for 3rd place in the Shield competition with the scoreline marginally closer than the original group fixture - this may have been thanks to Jonathan Cole who had been drafted into the line-up for the final game. In the Shield Final, with YM having beaten DASH in the group phase, it was DASH who were triumphant in the all important final winning 3-1. The AA claimed 3rd spot in the Cup edging out Greystones HC 3-2 while the Panthers claimed the title as 2017 Champions beating Avoca HC by the same score.

Overall, an excellent day of mixed fun hockey and it was rounded off superbly at the Wishing Well for food and a drink and the raffle. Over €1,500 was raised which is a fantastic achievement. Many thanks to the organising committee who helped make this day such a success.
