Avoca Mixed 7s 2014

In previous years the weather had been amazing, alas, it was not to be this year. Although the sun was out briefly in the morning, it was mostly cold, wet and gloomy making playing conditions tough for any event. We tried to erect a marquee in the morning but that had to be abandoned as it took off and almost ended on the sports centre roof.

A full complement of 16 teams however braved the elements and the group games went smoothly with some excellent hockey on display. The Stragglers were the only side to complete 3 wins from the 3 in the group stage, while the Breaden's Commune looked strong along with 2013 runners-up Glenageary Utd and new teams St. Andrews and Sparta.my.

2013 Champions and Holders the Panthers seemed to be a different team this year however and lost all 3 group games finishing bottom. They certainly found their way though in the Shield competition as they eliminated WUI's (We Understand Idiots) and Team TITS (Team Taking It Too Seriously) and found themselves in the final only for captain Mark Meir forced to withdraw his team from the competition due to team injuries. P.O.W.S.L.D. (Pre-Olympic Wheelbarrow-Shovel-Ladder Deathball edged out an improved Boyne side 3-2 and then beat 69ers by the same score in reach the final. With the Panthers withdrawing, they played Team TITS and comfortably won 9-0 to claim the Shield.

The Whites, who had been thrown together at the last minute to replace a team who had withdrawn from the tournament, beat Hook Hackers 4-0 to set up a match-up against WUI's in the Trophy final. Ruth McDonagh had been playing for the Whites as they had been short, but her loyalty was with the WUI's and it was great to see this match so keenly contested; the Trophy was ultimately won 5-4 by the Whites!

The Cup Quarter Finals were all closely fought games with two of the matches decided by a solitary goal. Those teams defeated then competed in the Plate semis. Glenageary booked their place in the final following a narrow 2-1 victory over Wolverines while Sparta.my were gifted a 3-0 walkover by the Black Ninjas who had had enough of the poor weather and headed home after the Cup exit. Sparta.my nabbed a 3-2 win over last year's Cup Runners-up Glenageary Utd and they'll be gutted after another final defeat.

The Cup semis both went to the wire; the Commune ousted Flick Tease 3-2 while St. Andrews scored a golden goal to beat the Stragglers by the same score. The Cup 3rd spot became the day's highest scoring match as it finished 8-7 to Flick Tease; again another golden goal defeating the Stragglers! The youthful St. Andrews cruised to victory in the Cup Final winning 4-1 as the Commune's energy levels began to fade due to a lack of substitutes.

The tournament's top goalscorer was Gavin Dunne (Flick Tease) following a hatful of goals scored in the 3rd place match. Sadly due to the rain ruining some of the score cards, our records cannot confirm his actual total. The tournament's Player of the Tournament award, nominated by Tournament Heaven, some of the referees and Avoca Hockey Club, went to Guy Sarratt (Sparta.my).

We would like to thank everyone for taking part on the day making it all possible. A huge thank you to Avoca Hockey Club for allowing us to use their facilities and Ruth McDonagh for her excellent help on the day. In total € 1245.00 was raised for LauraLynn, Irelandís only Childrenís Hospice. LauraLynn offers respite, transitional, crisis and end of life care, to families with children who have life-limiting conditions. We are going to round that up to € 1300.00
